Holiday Knitting & Shopping!

I’m pretty sure it’s not just me, but whenever I go on holiday, I find it so hard to decide what projects to take with me! Packing my actual bag is fine, but it takes me so long to pack my knitting projects!

I was on holiday last week and took FOUR projects with me, for a one week holiday! I think it’s because I never know what I’m going to be in the mood for.

I took my Hexagranny cardigan as a crochet project, my cotton summery top as a knitting project, a secret project which combines both knitting & crochet (lips are sealed for now, sorry!) and on the day before we left, I caked up a skein of sock yarn to start a new pair of socks.

I’m not really sure why, I haven’t knitted a pair of socks for a while now as I’ve had other deadlines, but I do love knitting a good sock!

And, as it turns out, my instincts were entirely correct, as the sock was the only project I worked on for the whole week! I was enjoying it so much, that the other WIPs didn’t even make it out of the bag!

This is a weeks worth of knitting, which I’m rather pleased with as I did also read two entire books on holiday as well.

I’m knitting the Comet socks pattern by Winwick Mum, which I’ve knit at least once before. The decision to knit this pattern was largely down to the fact that the pattern came free and printed out on a handy fold out card, and it was the first one I laid eyes on! I also remember enjoying knitting it, and wanted something a bit more complicated than just a vanilla sock.

The yarn I’m using is Zakami Yarns 4 ply Merino in the colourway Baba Yaga, which was bought on a holiday a few years ago, and caught my eye!

I’m using Addi Sockwonder Lace small circular needles in a 2.5mm size, these are my favourite sock needles to use. I do have a set of the regular sockwonders but now they only make them in a lace variety with a red cable, but they don’t feel much different to the normal type to me!

You can also spy one of my new row counter chains that I got from Atomic Knitting, which I have loved using so far. Combining the beginning of row marker and row counter, it’s meant that I haven’t had to slow down knitting when I get the the end of the round to keep count of my rows!

On our first full day on holiday, we went to the Cumbrian Wool Gathering! I was so excited for this, as we usually miss it but not this year!

This was actually the first yarn show I’ve been to, and I loved it! There were sheep and angora rabbits and so much yarn!!

I really wanted to buy spinning fibre, as I want to spin more this year as I enjoy it so much. I bought some fibre, then it felt weird to go to a yarn show and not buy any yarn, so that was quickly remedied!

These are all the treasures I bought:

Top left is 100g of spinning fibre from Velvet Sixpence from ‘The Elements: Fantasy’ collection in the colourway ‘Magic’ which is a blend of 25% Corriedale, 25% Merino, 25% Shetland & 25% Mulberry silk. I got 3 of these & can’t wait to see the colour this spins up!

Top right is spinning fibre from Jen Taylor Crafts & Fibres in the colourway ‘Cornflakes by the Sea’ which I think is a blend of merino but the label doesn’t say! I got 4 of these so hopefully it will be enough to spin into yarn for an accessory.

Bottom left is a 100g skein of 4 ply yarn from Second City Yarns in the colourway ‘Botanical Gardens in Spring’ which is 100% British Non Superwash Bluefaced Leicester.

Bottom middle is a 100g skein of 4 ply yarn from AndKnit in the colourway ‘Fairfax’ and is 80% Superwash Merino & 20% Nylon.

Bottom right is a 100g skein of 4 ply yarn from AndKnit in the colourway ‘Marco’ and is 70% Superwash Merino, 20% Yak & 10% Nylon.

I’m so pleased with everything I bought, but it was rather hard not buying everything, as every vendor had such beautiful things!

Have you been to a yarn show before? Let me know in the comments!
