Okay, a weird post title, but bear with me.
When I first started knitting, all I ever bought was balls of yarn. You know, the ones that you can start using straight away. Occasionally I’d see the fancy skeins of yarn, all twisted up, and thought I’d never be able to buy one, as I didn’t have the space for a ball winder or yarn swift.
Then I heard of a thing called a ‘nostepinne’ did a bit of searching, and found out that it was essentially a big stick.
I found a video on YouTube explaining how to use one, and someone had commented on it saying that they used a turkey baster instead.
Genius! A nostepinne was a good £20-£30, but I could buy a turkey baster for £1, and so that’s exactly what I did!
Yes, it’s a lot slower than using a yarn swift and winder, but sometimes, needs must!

I had this beautiful West Yorkshire Spinners Exquisite Lace yarn, and gave the turkey baster a go!

A bit of progress, the hardest part was keeping it neat so it wouldn’t end up in a massive tangle.

Getting there slowly, it became a yarn egg!

The finished result! Yes, it did take me a whole evening to wind, but the turkey baster worked!
Now, I own a yarn swift and winder, and can turn skeins into cakes in less than 10 minutes, but I love finding out little tips like this. Sometimes, a little comment on a video can make a big difference.

*it can also be used to wind a skein of yarn, what did you think I was going to say?!
