I try and keep track of my projects on Ravelry, mainly for my own information. The downside of having multiple WIPs is that I can easily forget which size needles or hook I’m using, as I may have lost the piece of paper with my gauge swatch info on.
Now I try to also put yarn details and pattern information, as I really enjoy looking at other users project pages to see how they have found the pattern and what yarn they have used.
Which is all well and good, but what if someone wants to look at my project and that information just isn’t there?!
I have started rating yarn choice and pattern information, adding in any modifications I have made, and if it’s a garment I will add in at least one photo of me wearing it, so other makers can see it on a different size.
Another useful feature is the ‘frog’ status, adding in why a yarn or pattern hasn’t worked is also really helpful.
I like to think that when a project doesn’t work out, it’s not a waste of knitting time, but rather gives me more experience and knowledge, and I always learn something from it.
Earlier this year, I started making the Tipsy Tee by Knitting Tipsy, which is a cosy crochet tee, and looks like the perfect summery cover up.
I bought some Drops Safran cotton yarn to use in a lovely sage green, and had to get a new set of Clover Amour crochet hooks as when I started gauge swatching, I realised I didn’t have the right size.
It took me a few attempts to meet gauge, I had to slightly adapt the lacy section of the V-stitch, but eventually I got there.
I worked on it until I had completed about 6cm of the first panel, and realised that I wasn’t loving the fabric that I was creating. It was a bit too stiff, and wasn’t the soft, drapey fabric I was trying to create.
Someone commented on my project page and asked me how the yarn was working out. I dug out the project, as I had neglected it for a few months, and realised – I’m not loving this project.
The problem definitely lies with the yarn I chose, although it’s classed as a 4ply yarn, it’s a little bit too thick compared with the examples in the pattern.
I love the pattern, so I will definitely look out for a different crochet yarn that I can use to make it.
And with that, I officially put the project onto ‘frog’ status on Ravelry.
Now, unfortunately, I will have to go yarn shopping!
