Well, that’s what I’m trying to do anyway!
If you didn’t know, I was sewing long before I was knitting! Sewing was my first crafty love.
I started off with cross stitch, then went onto hand embroidery, and finally machine sewing when I started high school.
I haven’t sewn much in the last 11 years, only a few alterations of turning up trouser legs and replacing zips. I did sew a cross body bag about 7 years ago which I absolutely loved. So much so, that it developed holes and couldn’t be saved!

I’d been watching ‘The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ and she has a bag quite similar to this one, and when I couldn’t find one online to buy, I decided to make my own. I didn’t use a pattern, but just sort of measured and cut the fabric and went for it. This project was a definite success!
I sewed a dress, but it was one of those things that you do, but don’t really think about whether the pattern or the fabric actually suits you. I LOVED the fabric, a grey cotton with some beautiful florals on it, but it wasn’t really me. It was so long ago that I can’t remember what pattern I used, I think it was from a Burda magazine, but that information is long gone!

I still love this fabric, but I feel like the dress was a bit sack-like and didn’t really suit me. But oooh look! Both my bag and dress are handmade! No, my bag wasn’t really an evening bag but I just loved it so much!
Looking back at these photos, they’re all from the same holiday, so I was definitely on a little sewing bug back in 2018!

The third and final project I made was a summery cardigan. I think this also used a pattern from a Burda magazine, and the fabric was from Abakhan.
Again, looking back now, the colour was way too bright for me! I can remember that pink fabric was a bit of a nightmare too as the dye kept transferring onto things, no matter how many times I washed it!
So now, I’m trying to think a little bit more about pieces I actually need in my wardrobe, and trying to find patterns to suit.
And I also need to try and think more about colours that actually suit me, so that the garments I sew are ones that I actually like!
There’s nothing worse than spending all of the time, effort and money on something that ends up being something you never wear because it doesn’t make you happy!
I have a few sewing projects I want to give a go this year, they are all using ready made patterns, which hopefully all go well and I can share the progress here!
I want to try and draft my own patterns in the future, again something I haven’t done since graduating, but I definitely want to give it a go again!
What have you been sewing lately?
