The short answer is…YES!
When I first started knitting, I only used straight metal needles.
And then wondered why my hands hurt when I had loads of stitches on my needles.
Or why in the winter, my hands would get cold.
I had heard of circular needles, but thought you could only use them when you were knitting in the round.
How wrong I was!
When I knitted my first pair of socks, I used DPN’s or double pointed needles. In fact, my first few pairs were knitted on DPN’s, and although I knitted some nice socks, I didn’t love the process.
Then I discovered small circular needles made especially for sock knitting!
And the socks then flew off my needles!
Getting back to the title of this post, I soon realised that circular needles aren’t just great for knitting in the round, but for knitting flat too!
Instead of all of the weight of your work on the needles and in your hands, the cables between the needles holds all of that weight, and you can keep it in your lap instead.
I also like to thread a row counter onto the cable, as an easy place to keep it so I don’t lose count of my rows!
All you need to do is knit as you normally would, and when you get to the end of your row, simply swap the needles round.
The needle in your left hand goes to your right hand, and the needle in your right hand goes into your left hand.
As simple as that.
I made a little YouTube video to show how easy it is to use circular knitting needles on a flat piece of work.
Have you tried using circular knitting needles before? What do you think?
